Every Vote Matters

Sutton then went on to thank all who had worked so hard to bring about positive change on Nov. 2nd. “I want to say thank you to each person who’s here today,” he began, referring to the more than two thousand people in the crowd. “I want to say thank you to every single volunteer who’s been dropping the literature, making those phone calls, pounding up those thousand of lawn signs throughout the state. I want to say thank you to all of the candidates who have literally given their blood, sweat and tears to their campaigns: door knocking; going door to door… they are ambassadors at the doorstep for the Republican party.”

“I want to thank all the Republican Party leaders throughout the state, the grassroots group without which this party could not work; could not function. I want to thank all our contributors. Without our contributors we wouldn’t have the resources to do what we need to do… I really want to thank the staff who’s done a tremendous job helping not only to organize this event today but busting their tails to get the Republicans elected. Because without the volunteers, the contributors and the staff, we couldn’t do this; we couldn’t do what we’re going to do November 2nd.  We’re going to make history!”

“I just mentioned the 2008 elections a minute ago and one of the most heartbreaking things for me was when that recount was over and Al Franken was U.S. Senator. That was heartbreaking because I don’t believe Al Franken represents the values of Minnesota.  I don’t think he really understands what the purpose of government is. He thinks government is supposed to raise taxes, increase spending, take money from the so-called rich, so-called job providers. It was heartbreaking; it was heart breaking.  But you know what? We learned a lot of lessons from that.” Sutton then introduced the man he said he wished were Senator today: Norm Coleman.

Senator Norm Coleman

Senator Norm Coleman

“What a glorious day,” Coleman began before launching into a pertinent metaphor. “ The sun is shining out there in our face; the wind is a strong wind that is blowing behind our backs. That’s awareness that is blowing across Wisconsin when Russ Feingold is retired and it’s going across North Dakota which will have a Republican Senator, a Republican member of Congress; and blowing across South Dakota which will have a Republican Senator and a new Republican mayor. And by the way, it is blowing a way that Nancy Pelosi will lose her gavel on Tuesday and Harry Reid will be doing what too many Americans are doing: looking for a new job. “

Coleman had an answer for the whys. “The reason is that two years ago people wanted change. They wanted to change Washington, they didn’t want to change America. So we are at a crossroads right now.”

Coleman ended with the solution. “If you believe and understand that the way to grow jobs is to set loose the entrepreneurial spirit that which has made America great, keep limits on taxes. If you understand we don’t have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem; and if you believe that in the end we don’t want government to run our health care; we want a system market to get the best, the lowest cost and the highest quality then you’ve got to vote for Tom Emmer because he understands. He understands what will keep America great. My friends, this is our time.”

Coleman implored the crowd to prevent what happened in his election from ever happening again. “In spite of the tens of thousands of folks that ACORN brought to the polls, in spite of the fact that there were nineteen precincts that had more votes than voters, despite all of that, my race ended up being 312 votes, that is less than one vote in every three precincts…The key is in your hands to make sure that doesn’t happen again. Every vote counts and in the end we need you to. “

Coleman ended with a favorite quote of his by philosopher Rabbi Maimomedes: “ Each of us shall do ourselves as if the world were held in balance and any single act of goodness on our part could tip the scales. “

“My friends,” continued Coleman, “ the future of this country, the future of the state of Minnesota is held in the balance on Tuesday. A single act of goodness – maybe making that extra phone call even though you are tired, maybe knocking on that extra door even though your feet may hurt… to make sure you get yet another person to the polls because the choice is so clear. We are at a turning point in this country. If you believe as I do in the greatness of America, in the greatness of Minnesota, and if we can just unleash the free gift of the entrepreneurial spirit, of individual opportunity that we are gifted to have in this country… it is at risk on Tuesday. The choice is clear: you vote for Tom Emmer!”
