Governor Dayton Wants to Increase Spending to Grow Government

Hello again friends!!
Thought I would send you an update on today’s (Thursday, May 19th) activities here in St. Paul.
Today the Republican House and Senate Caucus met with Governor Dayton regarding our budget proposal. Our budget proposal balances the budget without raising taxes. Our budget proposal is a 6% increase from last biennium. 6% more!! How many of you have received a 6% raise this past year? How many of you think Government really deserves a 15% raise? I don’t think so – but Governor Dayton does.
Governor Dayton wants to INCREASE spending to GROW government. This is totally inappropriate. He wants to do this by finding a minority of people…successful people who have worked incredibly hard for what they have. Governor Dayton wants to find them and tax them. Some of our most productive small business owners and MN families he wants use them to tax our way out of this mess. I stand firm with the business owners and families who are living with less. I stand firm to save and enhance our economy.
While Dayton was polite and conversations were cordial during our meeting this morning, there was a certain disconnect. Governor Dayton is not connected with the people of Minnesota. He is out in a world where if we just raise taxes everyone is going to hold hands, sing Kumbaya and that Minnesota will be great once again. Folks…. MN is already great. You are already working hard. You are already paying for the State’s LARGEST budget in history. In history and still it’s not enough for Governor Dayton.
The state government has a spending problem! Minnesota cannot get enough of your hard earned dollars to feed it’s appetite. It’s time to grab hold of the reins and put a brake on it. I told you what my values were when I ran, and I will not walk away from those statements.
To give you an idea of what type of person we are dealing with (meaning Governor Dayton) this was said in today’s meeting. “Your refusal to meet me halfway between our respective budget proposals disregard this moral established leadership”
To that quote I say this: What about the 30/32 budget that we wanted to pass but knew would get vetoed right away. So instead, we compromised. We compromised at 34 billion dollars. You wanted Governor Dayton wanted more spending mixed with some cuts. That’s what the Republican budget plan is – it’s a plan mixed with new revenue (3 billion worth) mixed with cuts and those cuts were from projected spending targets. We compromised.
Another Dayton quote from the meeting…. “At the end of this hour I doubt we will have persuaded each other.”
To that I say this: Mr. Governor, you have a defeatist attitude. You have already been out in front of the press saying you aren’t even going to read the bills – that you will just veto them. That’s poor leadership in my opinion. It’s like when my kids don’t get their way and they kick and scream until I give in. Well Governor – MN is not giving in to your demands.
This morning we passed the budget bills off of the House floor and sent them to Governor Dayton. He plans to veto the bills sending us into special session unless we buy into his tax the rich plan to further grow government. Please call Governor Dayton and ask him to sign the bills and that MN doesn’t need it’s taxes raised.
You must understand that under Governor Dayton’s plan there are NO structural changes. Minnesota goes back into deficit. Then we must ask ourselves: Whose money will he come after when MN needs more? Minnesota is fighting an ideological war and a stand must be taken now!
