Oberstar’s Healthcare Vote Allows Tax-Payer Funded Abortions

Despite Congressman Oberstar’s assurances that there would be no taxpayer funding of abortion under Obamacare, it was reported this week that the President approved $160 million for the state of Pennsylvania to implement a new insurance program that will cover abortions.

Oberstar said he was, “confident that abortion will not be funded in this legislation,” and said any claim to the contrary was, “flat out false.” (Oberstar statement, March 20; Star Tribune, March 31).

“It has become abundantly clear that the only thing ‘flat out false’ is Congressman Oberstar’s claim to be pro-life,” said Chip Cravaack. “He put party and politics over principle with his ‘yes’ vote for this healthcare bill.”

The insurance plan will cover any legal abortion in Pennsylvania. Under Pennsylvania state law, any abortion prior to 24 weeks is legal except in cases where the abortion is solely because of the sex of the unborn child.

“Taxpayer funding of abortion betrays the pro-life principles the people of Northern Minnesota hold dear,” Cravaack said. “In Congress, I will fight to repeal Obamacare and protect the innocent lives of the unborn.”
